DIANNE BUTLER
Why did you decide to join the CASE committee?
One of my brothers committed suicide in 1991 and I want to help prevent other families going through what my family went through then and still suffer today.
Why is a committee like CASE so important?
We're “spreading the word”, letting people know that it is ok to seek help for anxiety & depression.
What role do you play in the committee? Are you a point of contact for those at risk?
I don't hold any position other than being a committee member, my role is to attend monthly meetings, support our leader,be available to help with fundraising and raising awareness of our group. Yes I am a contact person. I have recently had an "Incident" where I was able to provide that person with some contact numbers to seek professional help. I was able to follow up with that person and they are now getting the help required.
How significant do you think it is to be able to ‘help a mate out’ and create suicide awareness in the community?
Given the statics for suicides in Hay I feel it is very important to help our mates if they're going through a rough patch and make yourself available to them. Sometimes just a coffee and a good chat will help.
What have you gained from your involvement so far?
I have gained a lot from my involvement with CASE. I have completed a full day course in suicide prevention/intervention, the course is called CORES, I found this course to be both interesting and emotional. I have also completed a 6 hour course in mental health first aid ... I feel confident that if anyone in need of help were to contact me I would be more than capable of putting them in touch with the appropriate professional service for them.
